Lost In Thought

Lost In Thought

First Book in the Sententia Series

Cara Bertrand

Lainey Young has a secret: she’s going crazy. Everyone else thinks she has severe migraines from stress and exhaustion. What she really has are visions of how people died—or are going to die. Not that she tells anyone that. At age 16, she prefers keeping her crazy to herself. When doctors insist she needs a new and stable environment to recover, Lainey’s game to spend two years at a private New England boarding school. She doesn’t really think it will cure her problem, and she’s half right. There is no cure, but as she discovers, she’s not actually crazy. Almost everyone at Northbrook Academy has a secret too. Half the students and nearly all the staff are members of the Sententia, a hidden society of the psychically gifted. A vision of another student’s impending death confirms Lainey is one of them. She’d like to return the crappy gift of divining deaths with only a touch, but enjoys spending time with Carter Penrose—recent Academy graduate and resident school crush—while learning to control it. Lainey’s finally getting comfortable with her ability, and with Carter, when they uncover her true Sententia heritage. Now she has a real secret. Once it’s spilled, she’ll be forced to forget protecting secrets and start protecting herself.

"Simply put, Lost in Thought is an absolute must. You’ll fall in love with the shocking story and amazing ending. Be sure to pick up a copy when it hits shelves April 25."
~ Girls Life Magazine

"Lainey gets her first taste of high school drama, which also melds with her suddenly supernatural life. Bertrand infuses the book with plenty of mystery surrounding the main character’s family history and the Sententia’s governing body. She ups the ante and tension by finally revealing the protagonist’s and Carter’s more dangerous talents."
~ Danielle Serra, School Library Journal

"Compelling and solid, this paranormal thriller has it all: love, murder, intrigue, mind games, and a bit of mystery." ~ as reviewed by Publishers Weekly for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest

"...my pick for the winner [of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest], a fantastic novel trying to break free...The boarding school setting is a lot of fun, and the chemistry with Carter snaps...Lainey and Carter begin exploring the provenance of Lainey's Legacy, the true extent of her powers, and just how those powers might be manipulated, the book starts to pick up momentum, leading to an action-packed ending with a twist that will leave readers clamoring for the next installment." _ Gayle Foreman, New York Times Best Selling Author of IF I STAY, WHERE SHE WENT, JUST ONE DAY, and JUST ONE YEAR

"The tale of Lainey Young’s journey from being a seemingly normal girl with a secret to an extraordinary girl with many secrets will draw readers in and leave them wanting more! Author Cara Bertrand’s sharp writing and crisp, authentic dialogue make the unbelievable utterly believable, and the well-drawn characters likeable and equally despicable and, in Carter’s case, irresistible. Tinged with mystery from page one, Lost in Thought keeps readers guessing from beginning to end, and will appeal to paranormal romance fans of all ages." ~ Amy Ackley, author of SIGN LANGUAGE

"I personally love books about: people who find out they have psychic abilities, boarding schools, people who find out they have this long-standing destiny they never knew about, etc. And Lost in Thought is all these things and so much more!"

"I give this book 5 stars. It's hard to imagine a better book! This book is the next big series. First there was Vampire Academy. Then the Darkness Rising Trilogy, then Hunger Games and Divergent. It is now time for Sententia to take over. "
